We used the D.I.V.E. CD for Saxon 5/4 for about one half of the year. I loved the voice, the simple explanations and the way the author breaks problems up into simple pieces. He also uses techniques and tips that he reinforces as he teaches through the lessons. I loved how it went along with the book. I love how you can rewind if you need more review or to hear it again. I love how you can work the problem out while he is working it. My 10 year old was very good at figuring out how to navigate through the CD all by herself. So I think saying it is user friendly is fair. I think it is a very complete way to learn math.

After saying all of this, it just didn't work for may daughter. She really liked the idea of doing it "on her own" and would dependably come and do her lessons every day. But she got to hate it. She dreaded him and said he sounded too monotone. I did not think he did sound monotone but how else can you teach math? It isn't something you put a lot of inflection into.

I used it for a supplement in math because my second daughter was learning to read and I needed to spend more time with her. I thought this would be an excellent way to get the math done as Saxon, by far, it is our longest subject. My daughter really needed me by her side during the teaching of the lessons. She is a very social being and I think she felt isolated. As she has gotten older, she is doing more work independently. I am inclined to think it was because of her age and maturity level that D.I.V.E. didn’t work for us and think that it would be better for older students; at least at our house.

A friend of mine let me borrow this CD and I do not know if I would have purchased this on my own as it is pricey for our budget.

We switched to Saxon 87 a few years back. I remember spending so much time with my son trying to figure out the answers to quite a few problems, then the next year I was doing the same with my other son. I was tired of not being consistent with our math programs and did not want to switch to yet another curriculum. A friend of mine told me she used D.I.V.E (Digital Interactive Video Education) for math. It has been more than worth it for our family. The boys just click on the program and a chalkboard appears with the voice of Dr. Shormann. I haven’t panicked when it comes to math. I don’t recall the boys ever having a struggle trying to figure the equations out. Their math scores are better than they used to be.

We chose to skip the new concept problems in the workbook because the student practices the new concept while they follow along the current lesson. My boys can rewind if they need to, or move forward when they understand.

For having a masters in Marine Chemistry, Aquatic Science, a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering, Dr. Shormann is not intimidating. He gets the point across clearly in a palatable way. In Algebra 1, I could not use the 1st Edition Saxon, because it was too complicated, so it is best to purchase the 3rd, most current edition. To get quality in mathematics lectures, I would have paid (willingly) a lot more than $50.00! Not only am I glad that the program is based on a Christian worldview, I am also thrilled that D.I.V.E. has come up with the CLEP (College Level Examination Program) and AP (Advanced Placement) Exams for less than 40.00. So far so good!

I LOVE these CDs, and for those homeschool moms not strong in math, these are genius! I love how it's right in their face with facts and they can pause it any time they need to or go back and listen again, to understand the materials. The lessons are split in sections and easy to find on the computer. The host voice uses great examples and he uses Biblical principles while doing so.

I think I'd be lost without these things!

These are used with Saxon Math and also Bob Jones Math.
